The students can apply online for free at KIIT websites www.kiitee.ac.in/www.kiit.ac.in from December 10, 2015 to March 25, 2016. The last date for receiving application form is March 31, 2016.Each year, a student spends close to Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 for applying in various institutions and subsequently writing entrance tests. With most of the institutions conducting their own tests for admission, a student needs to apply in each institution by paying a hefty fee and if selected, pay another set of fee to write exams. In many cases, even in a single institution, a candidate needs to pay separate fee for writing tests for different exams. As the test application and entrance test fee varies in thousands of rupees, the student ends up paying a hefty sum for these institutions without a clue whether he gets selected or not! For long, there has been a demand from the student community to condone off or reduce the test fee. However, even the government run institutions haven't taken the lead so far.As a student friendly gesture, the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University which conducts the annual KIITEE has chosen to do away with both the application and entrance fees. This means-a student who is aspiring to join any of the KIIT courses; BTech to BArch, MBBS to BDS and MCA to LLM need not pay a single paise fee for these entrance tests. Kick-starting a new trend in the country, KIIT founder Dr Achyuta Samanta said, "We have received a numerous representations from the students as to why they were being charged for the entrance tests for which they were not sure of getting through. As this is the age of multiple tests, thousands of rupees were being spent on application and entrance fees; leave alone the college fee. So, we had decided to scrap the application/entrance test fee and any candidate can log into our website and apply for free. We hope this will be one of the major relief for the student community across the country."BackgroundWhy so many entrance tests? For example, India has 30 NITs (National Institutes of Technology), 15 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), four IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and five IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research) along with scores of deemed universities. This means that there are more than 160 entrance tests in the country alone with take place anywhere between March to August.
